FDP Forum / Fender Amps: 1985 - Current / Favorite Offbeat Speaker in DRRI

I pulled the heavy but efficient Jensen 12K out of my DRRI and installed it in my Ramparte to make it giggable for big band concert gigs. It made the Ramparte sound better and a bit louder, but the Ramparte was heavy enough to eventually tear the leather handle.

So I needed to put a speaker in the DRRI. I considered a Warehouse Sound small magnet 12, but I was afraid the 15 watt power rating wasn't going to handle it. So I installed the Ramparte's 50 watt in the DRRI. Turned out to work well. It was nearly two pounds lighter and a bit less efficient. To me it sounds like an old bigger magnet Fender Utah which is fine to me. Any other "different" replacements?

Hi Twangmeister!

I just got me a (reasonably cheap) WGS G12Q to try out in my Blues Junior and I like it very much!
Its lightweight and 20 Watts and it plays great. Brand new, but it sounds and feels "broken in" already.
Its a bit warmer/mellower than, say, a Jensen C12R, so it might suit a DR very nice!

cheers - C.

My blackface 67 DR needed a new speaker. I tried a bunch I had on hand...EV SRO with the big coffee can magnet, PV Scorpion, new C12N (too strident with distortion0 and others.

I tried a Celestion Vintage 30 and it sounded good, but the muted high end just "sucked the Fender" out of the amp.

I got my hands on a chrome frame, Peavey XXX speaker for $15. (the edge needed to be glued)

It sounded like the V30 but with a clear Fender/Jensen type high end. It was perfect.

It's still in there today. FWIW, Peavey told me that was what they were going for with the XXX speaker.

The new C12N was a disappointment, until Joe Naylor, on this forum, told me to cut out the hard paper dustcap and replace it with felt.

I did that, and that reissue C12N went from my least favorite, to my favorite 12 for Fenders. The dustcap change took away that strident, piezo like high that sounded terrible with any distortion, amp or pedal, and made it sound like a vintage C12N.

It's in my original 65 Princeton Reverb now.

My all time faves for the DRRI are the Celestion Blue and the Jensen P12Q. Mostly for clean, YMMV.
