an acquired taste some may never acquire
Sep 5th, 2018 10:04 AM   Edit   Profile

Don't know how many threads I've seen in stringed instrument forums wherein the originator asks something to the effect of, "my new guitar was just shipped cross country and I need to know how I should acclimate it to this new climate. I'm going nuts wanting to play it, but don't want to damage it with exposing to changes too abruptly".

Some responses recommend unlatching but not opening the case to allow the bass/guitar to "breath" and adjust to the temperature and humidity changes, etc.

So yesterday, I was parking outside the auto parts store and noticed that there was a caseless, acoustic guitar on the dashboard of the locked van with out-of-state plates parked behind me, roasting in the full, midday sun.

I guess the guy who owned it was just letting it "breath" and adjust to California before playing it here.

Wise move...

I had a friend who used to take his Yamaha acoustic to the beach in Santa Monica and leave it stuck in the sand while he went to take a swim. No damage anyone could discern. Of course, those do have laminated tops.

Nah, it's roasted maple.

Wasn't when he bought it though!

Yeah...it's wood. That's a good thing.

I have a really nice Gibson J45 acoustic that has a composite ("richlite") fingerboard and bridge.

Looks like ebony, feels like ebony, super stable, never dries out, is extremely abrasion resistant, etc. But it's not wood; it's an "engineered wood product." Dunno yet if that's good or bad.

Locked car in the sun ,windows rolled up ,guitar in case in back seat = wood guitar kit. It simply came apart.
