The Free World

The New World Order is DOOMED...

----Not even mine; a beat up cherry burst flat body. Wall stud loops in place of typical strap buttons--quite laughable really. Dual exposed buckers, three way switch, one tone & one volume...

Epiphone Special on head stock w/ Gibson on the truss rod cover. The guitar belongs to a nice little old tavern that serves food at certain times and hosts musical talent constantly.

I help host & facilitate a musical and varied open mic there and when I first started over a year ago I found this beat up Epi LP in a mild state of disrepair in the basement.

Some new strings and a re-grounding wire job later--playing thru my Fender Super Champ X2 head & late 90's (amp gutted) Fender 112 cab. Channel 2 and then on the amp 1-16 bank channel 3. Gain dialed up to 9, volume at 6. Tuned to open E and for slide this was manna......SOOO the tone I am looking for.... Looks like my Std '99 Strat is gonna need some buckers installed......

You won’t quite get there with the Strat. The 24.75” scale length plays a part in that tone.

That's true.

Tone is not just the parts. It's a combination of everything.

Get yourself a used $50 Epi Special (or buy one new from any of the usual suspect vendors for about $99), do some TLC work on it, and you'll be there for less money than the cost of new pickups for your Strat.

It's a super-cheap, GOOD alternative to a Les Paul Special or Junior

Or offer to buy/replace the one that was languishing in the basement.

I reckon a lot of it has to do with really just wanting the dynamic abilities of a guitar that has 2 buckers on in. I may perhaps end up asking about buying said guitar. The dude it was intended for is long gone and never returns to play it.....

Guess I'll just keep it company and make sure it gets useful playtime for the time being..... :)

The owner is temporarily gone traveling but when he returns I'll likely have a talk to him about the beater LP and it's fate...

Thanks to every one of you for the responses! :)

I own two of those that I have modded (one quite extensively) and they're great playing/sounding guitars. I've got Fender vintage Noiseless pickups in them and they have a great and unique sound.

(various pics in my profile)

I should update the photos because their appearance has change even more since those were taken.

JMO: Don't try to make the Strat into something it's not.
If you want more beef and tone sculpting capability and want to use your Strat, get a Boss GE7 Eq pedal.
It boosts, it EQs, it's a sleeper pedal.

Mick, if it's hanging on the wall and you want to trade this might a rare appropriate time for a Chinese fake-o Gibby. The ones I've seen are only a couple hundred bucks.

The P90 version of this little axe is also well worth the price of admission - especially if you can score one during a holiday (or other) sale. I bought one for my granddaughter's Christmas gift a few years ago, performed the appropriate TLC (as suggested by Peegoo) and transformed it into a wee beastie! I almost preferred the cheapie Epiphone over my PRS Soapbar!

If you haven't seen the comparo between the moocho dinero Les Paul and the muy affordable Les Paul, it is surprising just how good the cheap one sounds.

Further proof it's the player,

not the guitar.
