What gauge strings do you recommend for a D-28? Currently using 12’s.

It depends upon whether you play in standard or 1/2 step down. If standard then 12's. If half step down then 13s.

I like mediums because of the tone but tune down where my it's easier on the voice.

I'm using Martin's in between Medium-Light set: MSP 4150. 12.5 - 55 gauge.

I also like the Martin Monel Retro Laurence Juber (LJ) signature set; they're medium on the low E, high B and E, and light on the A, D & G strings. works great for retaining low end thump and thicker highs, while still being easy on the fingers (unless you do extreme bending on the unwound strings). They also work well for drop D or double drop D.

I do alot of bluegrass , so I use 13s on mine. I am currently using the Martin Lifespans and really like them on my D18.

12s or 11s

I have owned around 14 Martins.. Currently 2.

A 1997 0000-1, my second 0000-1. (370 made, discontinued in 2000) and a
2015 00-18V. (very rare tight flamed mahogany backs and sides and a highly silked top)

I am using D'Addario EJ16 phosphor bronze .012-.053 (light gauge) on the 0000-1 and I switch back and forth with the
D'Addario phosphor bronze .011-.052 light gauge on the 00-18V.

Martin strings don't work for me.

My favorite strings are still LaBella Silk and Steel 710 L 11-51 for 12 fret guitars.

I use these on my 1929 Stromberg-Voisinet.

This is not mine but

Identical

Another note..
Years ago (pre CFMIV) the head of the (real not the new consumer service dept)) Customer Service Dept at C F Martin and I were having a conversation about strings.. this would be in the early 80s. I was not getting what I wanted out of my 000 and 00 models. He strongly suggested buying GIBSON MONEL strings. I used them for years until Gibson discontinued them. Now the monels are all the rage. Admittedly I have not tried them. I don't buy Martin strings. Perhaps there is another option.

On my 1964 D-18, 2003 D18GE, 1994 D16, SPD16 (with ebony bits instead of rosewood), D-18S, 1968 D-35S, 2010 D-18VS custom,
all used 12s.

If I owned a D-28 I would be using 12s and likely D'Addario.

I like Martin SP strings in med and light. I keep lights on one guitar and mediums on the other. These are on an HD28V and D42.

I also use Martin SP mediums. I lost too much tone going to lights, and switched back.
