On Friday, I ruptured (detached) my right achilles tendon.

I'm currently in a temporary plaster until I can see a specialist later this week.
From what I've been told by the other healthcare professionals I've already seen, I have a 6-8 months to full recovery. This just sucks big time.

Since December 2016, I have endured and survived a heart attack and cancer. Now just when things were normalising from those two chapters, this bloody happens.
I have seriously had a gutfull of these things and feel like at my wits' end. Not to mention the guilt for subjecting my wife to it all.

I know there are plenty of others that are worse off than me, but I'm just not at a place where I can think about it objectively or unemotionally.

Flippin' heck, Mick, sorry to hear that. Have you had a proper diagnosis from a scan or did A&E just manually examine? Do you know the degree and position of the tear?

Vomer, I had x-rays done in Emergency Dept on Friday night and an ultrasound on Saturday morning.
A manual test was also performed. There is a definitive rupture but the exact location and extent is not known to me at this time.
That will hopefully be the discussion with the specialist as well as determining whether surgical or conservative measures are the best course of action.

I’m becoming educated in all things achilles as I go.

Yes, it's going to be wait and see what the specialist says then. Sending some good vibes for tendon healing. One small thing you can do is make sure you have sufficient Vitamin C in your diet as it helps with collagen deposition in repair of tendons and connective tissues.

Vomer, I'm guessing you're an osteopath as well as a cyclist, no?

Thanks for the tips on the vitamin C. I love mandarines and eat them regularly :^)

Yes, osteopath. After you've seen the specialist, if you want some rehab help I'll probably be able to find a recommendation for someone near you through one of our forums, just let me know later on if you want to follow that up. And take it easy!

That's a tough go, Mick. Hope you mend fast and well. Did the rupture happen while do any physical activity, or just one of those things?

A not uncommon and unfortunately easy to do injury. I know several people who’ve done it, one literally stepping off a curb, one playing tennis and one while fishing. It almost has a stupid random quality; just land in the precisely wrong way and boom! Here’s to following the rehab program religiously! You’ll get through it.
