I got a call from Dietze Music in Omaha over lunch; my J-18 has arrived! (Another post about this in the unplugged forum.)

We already had a trip planned to Omaha on Monday (3 1/2 hour drive from here), which works out great; they have time to install a K&K Pure Mini pup for me.

Here are the specs:
0000/J size body
18 style woods & appointments (Sitka top, hog b/s, tortoise binding, open gear tuners)
Enlarged sound hole
No pick guard
Rosewood bridge (w/ebony fretboard)

The woods are upgraded from 18 style to 40/41 style, and so far it looks pretty good (two pics in profile that Martin sent me a couple weeks ago).

I'll post a full review and more pics next week! Now how do I concentrate for the next few days? (Actually, I can now relax, knowing that it's been built and it's at the store.)

Waiting for the bridge... "now where's that confounded bridge?"

YES - I'm EXCITED!!!

And - I'll barely get this one broke in and the Martin J-40 will likely show up; I was told it should be finished "by the end of the month" - meaning end of October. So it's gonna be fun if I can squirrel away the time to get to know these.

I'm home with my new baby (last night), and it is perfect - no disappointments, no regrets.

Very nice indeed!

I didn’t know you could order a guitar with a larger sound hole.

"I didn’t know you could order a guitar with a larger sound hole."

Larger sound holes became "a thing" when Clarence White played his Martin D-28 so long and so hard that he literally wore the wood away around the sound hole, so he finally took it to a luthier and had him make it larger.

When White died, Tony Rice ended up with the guitar. The larger sound hole made a noticeable difference in how the sound projected from the guitar (not necessarily "better" but "different"), so when Rice had a signature model made (by Santa Cruz?) he had them make it with the larger sound hole.

Martin has also done a couple special editions and signature models (like the JDP II mentioned above) with the larger sound hole, so it has also become a custom shop option.

Congrats Mikey.
