I first heard drummer Vinnie Colaiuta with Frank Zappa's band many years ago.

Even if you're not a drummer, there are so many great ideas here you can apply to your own instrument and create music that is very much 'you'.

Here's Vinnie with Rick Beato, who is probably the best interviewer in the music business. His enthusiasm is dangerously (in a good way!) infectious.

No one remembers that he was also the drummer in the band for Joan Rivers' short-lived Late Night show. That's where I first (knowingly) heard of him. I was like "whoa, who's that drummer?"

The story about his giggle fit playing with Herbie Hancock is gold. I saw him w/ Herbie at the Hollywood Bowl. It was religious!

I've known of Vinnie since I was about 12 when I started seriously drumming. He's amazing.

I agree as well. The times I've been too tired to think my playing flows better.

Bill Evans spoke to a similar effect when he said you spend all those years practicing so you can just play and not think.

"Thinkin' leads to stinkin'" - Some well known jazz guitarist said this as quoted in Vintage Guitar.

Note - I do have to think a bit when soloing in the diminished scale or the harmonic minor scale.

The times when I'm playing and I simply go with the flow, about half the time it works (dumb luck) and the other half, if you could smell it, it's like a filthy trash can in the sun with the lid on it.
