FDP Forum / Fender Amps: 1985 - Current / What a difference a tube makes?

So I decided to revisit the Fender Super Sonic amp, this time I purchasing a used 2017 Super Sonic combo that I stuck a British made Vintage 30 in.

Two weeks in, I was ready to put her on the chopping block because of the ungodly "hiss" they have. Sadly, on top of it I live 1/4 mile from an AM radio tower giving me mad talk radio interference when turning up the reverb. I even went as far as adding another spike ground to my house with no avail.

A Fender Platinum repair guy said he checked with Fender and was told it's a high gain amp...high gain amps hiss??? I owned other high gain amps and never got a hiss like this. I own a VOX 50-watt nightrain head. You can't even tell the amp is on unless you hit a note.
one last try...I was searching through youtube and found a video where a guy did some experimenting and found a 12AY7 in V4 kills most of the hiss and what a difference. It even cleared up my talk radio issue.

Still thing it has plenty of meat behind it. I might have smoothed out some of my top end but nothing a few tweaks of my tone knobs couldn't fix!

Thanks you Youtube dude!!!

I had a similar issue with my PRRI recently. I had a hiss and what I thought was a ground problem somewhere. I changed the 12AY7 in V1 with a new one and bingo... quite as a “ church mouse”
