Tone is in the lingers

I bought some Toneriders for my guitar project and I wanted a little hotter pups to contrast my current Tele. It has a Tele bridge pup (9.2K), Strat middle (6.1K), and P90 neck (7.8K).

The problem is the neck P90 is dark and grainy. It sounds muffled even with a clean amp. Also, the output is loud compared to the other pups. I've played with height extensively to no avail, so I'm replacing it.

I'm a fan of Lollar pups and I'm considering the 5% underwound. Are there other options that I should consider?

Have a listen to the demo of the TV Jones T90. 6.7K in the neck position, sweeter and a little brighter than most P90's. But it will bark. I have one in the bridge position in an Epiphone Sheraton and it's fab. The video should give you an idea of the sound of the neck version.

A P90 down around 6K will be appreciably brighter than that 7.8K unit you have in there now. It will also be less powerful.

If you like Lollars, check 'em out.

You can call 'em up and speak with them about what tones you like and what guitar it's going in, and they will be able to steer you toward the best choice. Doing this will remove a lot of the guesswork from the process because they do this every day, and they've been doing it a long time.

I'm a huge fan of TV Jones' pickups too. Great recommendation.

Lindy Fralin is another great company that offers personal service when you're looking for something specific.

If you are open to the idea, don't rule out Mini Humbuckers, Allparts in particular. I put a set of these in my P90 routed LP and love them.

Nice sounding demo by goober with open fly

Peegoo, as I recall you also have tried out the Kent Armstrong Stealth 90's. Still dig them? I have one in the neck of my Warmoth Tele and really like it. The set I tried in the LP were fine but ultimately didn't rock my world.

My guitar is already routed for a P90.

A minihum will fit in a P90 rout, but it sounds like you got your mind made up. The Duncan Antiquity neck P90 is pretty sweet, too.

Yes, I have the Armstrong Stealth 90 in both the guitars pictured below. They sound so much like the original Gibson P90s it's a wash. But the huge plus is they're humbucking.

I have not played a neck-position Stealth 90.

Another option is GFS Gold Foil humbuckers (P90 package). I have a set of these in a Tele clone I made of red cedar, and they are fairly hi-fi sounding; very similar to Barden humbuckers. I like the GFS pickups too.

"I have not played a neck-position Stealth 90."

I had a Stealth 90 neck in my G&L Tribute Fallout.

It sounded great. It was well balanced from highs to lows. Sounded good clean and with overdrive.

My only problem was I had trouble balancing it with the bridge humbucker. The S-90 overpowered the bridge HB regardless of height adjustment.

I don't know why this was but it eventually drove me 'round the bend and I went back to G&L P90. I even tried a SD Trembucker in the bridge and they just did't play nice together.

It was weird... no logical explanation.

Sometimes, no matter what you do, you just can't get a pickup to play nice with another pickup. In a Les Paul Junior, that's not an issue :o)

It's a lot like stomp boxes. Some absolutely hate each other when they're in the same chain.

The Kent Armstrong Stealth 90 plays really nice in my Warmoth along with a GFS Lil Puncher in the bridge position.

I'm not a big P90 guy. I've tried the KA's (not a true P90), Duncan Antiquities, whatever came stock in an Agile Harm1 and stock Gibson P90s in the LP Tribute. As a set I like the stock Gibbies the best.

I just replaced the bridge pickup with the correct one (the dealer sent me the wrong pickup the first time). I triple-checked all of the wiring and hoped it might bring life back to the neck pup. It's still really muffled. My wife even noticed it.

I think there's something wrong with it but Tonerider said there's really nothing to go wrong with a pup if it ohms correctly. I disagree. It could be a bad pole piece or something else.

I just ordered the Lollar Underwound. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for all of the recommendations.

I have them in two of my guitars...P90's and a Tele set. They're my favorites.
