I'm talking about the 60th Anniversary one from 2014. Do you know if this is the normal flash coat for AVRIs of the time or if it is even thinner?

I really like one I played today but the price and some other things are keeping me from buying. The paint was beautifully sunken into the grain and I wonder if a '56 finish would do the same.

I think it's nitro sprayed onto the bare wood to achieve that 'finish in the grain' look. If it had a sealer (e.g., Fullerplast, etc.) on the wood, it wouldn't look aged like that coming straight from the production line.

I've never refinished one of these, so the above is me taking an edumakaytid guess.

Thanks. It's been hanging in a dry store for five years and it's ash, which I understand has a more open grain than alder. I have an ash Tele with the flash coat finish and after a year it's just barely starting to sink.

The more I think about it the more I wonder if it's the ash that makes the difference. I haven't seen any AVRIs that have been sitting that dry that long so it's hard to tell what alder will do.

I’ve had poly with a thin coat that had that sunken look too. Mine was a 2008 American Standard . I know the avri thin skins have a nitro undercoat, I can’t speak about the normal avri , just the abbynormal ones.
