Bought two TV Jones Pickups to put in my G5220 electromatic jet. (Coassic/Classic plus....Bummed because i guess real Filtrons are acquired taste....too much of a midrange honk.... like the stick pickups better, which ate basically humbuckers disguused as Filtron!

Oh yea? That is too bad. See if they will exchange you for the Ray Butts models? They are more clean. I mean, do you like the sounds in this video? I LOVE Filtertron tone.

Depend on what you are looking for. I hear the magnetrons are brighter if that’s what you are looking for.

I don’t even own a gretsch, but I’m sorry you had such a disappointment. Not a fun feeling.
Keep at it, you’ll get it!

Sadly went down the Rabbit hole....

I bought an average guitar and tried to do to much....I put Grovers on it and a tone pros bridge...(both great upgrades).
Guess I thought the filtron would be a plus, but it’s definitely an acquired taste....not for me...sadly out $300 with pickup rings.

Wiring it a back to stock...might through some CTS pots in while I have it apart!

Thanks for sharing your experience with these TV Jones pickups.

I've been there with gear far too many times (i.e., an "upgrade" turns out to be a downgrade).

That is too bad. I replaced the stock filtertrons on my 6128 with TV Jones Classics and the improvement was noticeable with better clarity and a more hi-fi tone. They worked for me.

Indeed Filtertrons have a very unique sound all their own. Quite a bit different to a PAF style bucker. I love them all, though. Thats part of why I have a slew of guitars.

I am willing to bet you can get your money on those if you sell them like new.

I bought mine because I wanted something that sounded different than my other guitars . It has that in spades. My 5420T has blacktop filtertrons and so far I havent been tempted to swap them out.

Very nice guitar for the money imo. That hasnt been stopping me from looking on CL . If I bought another one I would probably get something with dynasonics .

Dynasonics are a whole 'nuther thing too: they're like a hi-fi P90. Even the modern repros (DeArmond 2K) sound pretty authentic. Pretty close to a Rickenbacker High Gain "button top" pickup.

Dynas are indeed weird. *Very* high DC resistance for a single coil, like 10-11 Kohms. Then they usually use 1 Meg pots to brighter them up. But they sure sound good clean.
