FDP Forum / The 'Pup' Tent / Suggestions for Alder H-H Doubleneck Strat (as Gibson-ish as possible)

I'm looking to put together a doubleneck guitar with an alder body and 24.75" mahogany necks. I want to get it as close to the sound/feel of a classic Gibson EDS-1275 as possible, but wihout the set necks and mahogany body. If I could, I'd simply go with a mahogany body, but I can't.

I figure the scale length and mahogany necks cover some of the ground. But since the body will still be alder, what pickups do you people suggest to "Gibsonize" what amounts to an alder fat Strat?

I am far from being an expert, however, a set of SD Antiquities is a good start.

There is no real "Gibson" sound unless you're talking P90 tone from the 50s, or humbucker-and-Marshall tone from the 60s and 70s.

After that, there are so many recording techniques and effects used that all bets are off; add to that the many different models and power factors of Gibson-branded pickups, and there's no definitive Gibson sound.

However, if you're looking for a typical PAF type of sound from the late 50s through the 60s, Therealfrogman has a good suggestion.

Gibson '57 Classics and Stew-Mac Parsons Street humbuckers are also really great choices.

StewMac also makes a great PAF clone. The Parson Street humbuckers. They are excellent and affordable. I don’t think you could go wrong with a pair.

I guess I should have clarified. And maybe the entire thread isn't even necessary.

I am completely looking for classic PAF type tone. In my mind, I'm thinking the tone of an SG with humbuckers (not P90s). Mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood board, Gibson humbuckers. The entire intent of the thread was, I suppose, to ask what to do or what concession/adjustment to make if the guitar itself is alder instead of mahogany.

Do you need a brighter pickup, or a darker pickup, or whatever if your guitar is alder instead of mahogany?

And heck, when I think about it, many of my favorite SG tones all time and EDS-1275 tones all time were probably guitars with T-Tops and not PAFs anyway.

But the main issue is, does one need to make any sort of EQ adjustment to account for alder replacing mahogany? Or, are the woods close enough that it doesn't matter anyway?

I'm in the "the woods are close enough that it doesn't matter anyway" camp.

If you put some good Gibson-style PAF humbuckers in there, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
