I have replaced the stock pups on a 2017 Firebird (pelham blue) with Mojotone Johnny Winter pups and the stock wiring with an RS guitarworks harness and it is very, very nice!

Which of course has led me to inquire about the angle of the strings in relation to the pups...I removed the plastic pup-ring spacers. Now the bridge pup cannot be adjusted as close to the strings as before. I may put the neck pup ring plastic shim (which is shorter than the bridge pup shim) at the bridge pup to allow a little more adjustment towards the strings. Not too sure it could sound better if i did but it would angle the pup parallel to the strings.

They sound fantastic as is....soo much more of the Firebird sound that I didnt realize was missing with the stock pups. The neck pup is incredible.

Long winded i know but do these pups really need to be parallel with the strings?

Tone happens man. Pickup performance, tone, and output level is totally subjective. The answer to your question can only be determined by you experimenting. I looked at the mojotone website and they offer pickup rings. You could get a few of these and modify them as required to achieve a proper level alignment and then be able to play around with height adjustment on the fly.

Thx wrncbendr. I kind figured this but ya never know. They do sound great as is. I will probably just try the one ring on the bridge. They just never looked right to me (not vintage).

Click the link below to see how a slight twist in the pickup's base plate mounting flanges can affect how the pickup sits in a mounting ring or in a pickguard.

A really slight twist goes a long way. Don't over-twist it.

Thanks Peegoo! That is a good idea and reversible. I may just experiment with this. Then I can stop wondering.

Another thing that occurred here was that by installing the new pups and having them farther from the strings, some fret buzz has disappeared. Then I read the following today...

"I’ve seen this tons of times. Pickups themselves can be enough to make a string buzz. If you’ve got some fret buzz that seems to defy any other explanation, try lowering your pickups. See what happens."
