My eyesight ain't so good any more but at least me hearing is still there....

I've found that the lower powered amps I've owned with the 12AX7 in V1, are too "aggressive" and come off as sounding harsh especially with humbuckers..

but inserting a 12AY7 really tames them

and at the same time my larger wattage amps don't seem to suffer from this...

I know this isn't anything new..

that being said..any of you guys prefer the higher gain in stage 1?

After tinkering around I've settled on 5751 exclusively for V1.

I'm a 12AX7 sorta guy.

I do have one amp that sports a 12AY7 in V2 to tame the gain. It is an insane gain monster with all 12AX7s.

I've tried the 5751 too...I like it but I just had one fail....now I'm down to just one...and they aren't cheap to come by....

but I have a good supply of the Ay7's..

I have a 12AY7 in V1 of my amp. There was just so much gain available with a 12AX7 that I rarely had the gain knob above 3 1/2 (because I run the amp almost clean). The 12AY7 means that I can now run the gain knob up to 4 or 4 1/2. Other than than, the amp sounds and reacts identically.

I use 5751 or a 7025 in most of my amps in V1

That said I have 12ay7 in v1 of a 5e3 x2 (only tube I'd use in v1 in a tweed)

and I've found the 12ay7 in v2 with modern Fenders like a Bjr or a HRD works best for me.

The 5751 tube is a ruggedized version of the 12AX7 developed for military applications. They're designed to be extremely low-noise and have specs similar to the 12AX7; many are slightly lower gain than modern 12AX7s.

I use a Russian EHX 12AY7 in VI of my Excelsior Pro and like the change from the 12AX7. A little smoother with single coils in this amp.
