I’m thinking the studs that came with the guitar were meant to be plated and missed the process. That would explain the ill-fitting threads.

That makes sense. I did noticed the knob is a little different than knob that came with the new Greg’s he straplock. The threads I believe are identical. Kept the old knobs as spares.

I don't think so. Electoplated zinc is only .0002" to .0005" thick, not enough to cause the looseness that has been described.

Another possibility is that the miniature hanger bolts that screw into the body have a metric M8x0.7 machine screw thread and the buttons have an imperial #8-32 thread. Those are close enough that they will go together for a short engagement without jamming but will initially be very loose.

I know when I screwed the knob on ,there was some play front to back. Not much , but enough to notice. When I put the new stud in , there was no end to end play. Not with the new knob or the old. Te 52s reason is something that I thought initially, but I wasn’t sure. I do like that type of strap lock though.

"archie - significant advantages? Not really IMO. I loved the color and really like the fact you can see the wood grain through the finish. I would guess that all the finishes are in line with one another."

There is one thing different with the 59 in that it has the bridge locked down. If it intonates well with the locked bridge then that is an advantage in that it will not move around.

I'm curious, is yours the Sweetwater special offer with the distinct orange finish? I'm really wrestling with this one and think I'll likely give in. It's a toss up between the Sweetwater special and the Caddy Green.

Littlemuch, yes mine is the SW special. I understand your dilemma. I love the caddy green. I will own something in caddy green one day . You can’t go wrong with either choice.

Oops! I misstated the model. It’s a 5622.

So... it being a center block, I’m not as interested. I already have a nice one of those in red.

I saw a local hippie dippie 60's revival band here in Michigan the other day, one of the guitarists was playing what looked like an Aspen green Gretsch. This further exacerbated my need for one.
