""Vintage Cherry" is a bit lighter and a tad more "orange-y" than Gibson's previous Heritage Cherry SG's."

Yes, that does look great!! Congrats!

That is great! Saw the Jayhawks last week and the main guy, Gary Louris, was playing a vintage SG with the Vibrola and it sounded fantastic.

That's a NICE SG that Gary Louris has!!

Did you know that many of the Vintage 60's SG's and other 60's era Gibson electrics (think Firebirds, 335's) came equipped with stock Nylon Saddles?

Some of Gibson's Limited Edition guitars were spec'd with 'em too, including one of my personal favorites, the Elliot Easton Tiki Firebird. It's a GREAT guitar!!!

Nylon Saddles DO contribute to Vintage-y Tone!

Very cool guitar.

Another Jayhawks fan here - it's almost enough to motivate me to get another SG...

I'm glad they're making it with the lyre vibrola again! I don't know why they still insist on calling it a '61 reissue though- 61s had the sideways vibrola and were still labeled "Les Paul"

Mike the bluesman:

You're right, the lyre vibrolas are, for sure, good, simple designs that do a better job of maintaining tuning stability than the Gibson sideways trems that I've owned.

And I've owned two of them. I like the lyre with the walrus tooth....works better, looks cooler, too, I think!!

Also right on the '61 SGs being labeled Les Pauls....I have a friend who owns one and he paid $8,500 for that guitar....and it's worth it......

A quick update on the guitar and a bit of a tip:

So, after fiddling with it for close to a month, and me being a "feels and plays like buttah" perfectionist myself, I decided to take the guitar to my luthier yesterday to have him run a general check on it and see what he could do to "Butter it up". he found that:

1. The guitar had a bit too much relief.
2. Intonation was off.
3. Nut slots cut too high.

And this is on a brand new Gibson guitar (it was made in May).

I'm not complaining, per se, about the guitar's quality control......on the contrary......Gibson is making some WONDERFUL quality guitars these days.......SERIOUSLY! And this is one of them...

My point is this: No matter what new guitar you buy......you can expect that it will need an expert setup by a skilled luthier to make it sound and play it's best.

For a few minutes of my time and $20 out of my pocket, my luthier:

1. Re-set the truss rod.
2. Cut the nut slots to the correct depth.
3. Intonated the guitar, reversing the "G" string saddle in the process.

When he was done, his comment to me was..."Wow. What a GREAT guitar!"

With a new guitar, neck relief changes from factory settings 99.9% of the time on 99.9% of all guitars :o) It's as certain as taxes and death.

And it really is rare for everything (nut slot depth, saddle slot depth, etc.) to precisely match a maker's advertised specs.

Having a pro tweak the setup on virtually any guitar, new or used, is money well spent.
