My brother from another mother AChase4U invited me out to his HQ to assist with a repair on a Fishman piezo system in a really nice old Yamaha acoustic guitar dropped off by a client of his. The Fishman preamp used a slim PC board contained in a tube extension on the back of the jack inside the guitar.

The complaint was the electronics no longer worked after checking the guitar into airline baggage.

The baggage smashers must've really manhandled the guitar because the battery was loose and rattling around inside on the end of its wire.

We immediately started a thorough troubleshooting process by hitting a Thai restaurant in town.

GREAT food, and the couple that owns the place are lovely people.

We got back to HQ, pulled the wire loom completely out, tested all conductors with a meter, and determined it was the under-saddle piezo that was dead.

The delicate 90-degree elbow where the shielded wire connects to the piezo stick was broken at the center conductor's connection. Aaron speculated the jolt that dislodged the battery possibly pulled hard on the pickup's lead and broke the connection. I agreed with that.

We heated up a soldering stick and reattached the connection, and voila, it worked! These little piezo stick pickups are just a few bucks apiece and it really makes no sense to dissect one and make a repair to it.

Unless you're us, out in the middle of nowhere at an Undisclosed Location, with no spare piezo within a 50-mile radius to swap in.

It was a good outcome and always great to spend a few hours with a good friend.

Thanks for your help, brother. It was a GREAT time hanging as always. I appreciate your expertise and above all else, friendship.

This one was out of my reach as I don't go inside acoustics. A ham fisted guy like me is more at home working on a Fender that basically can't be destroyed.

The client, Dan from the sibling band Scythian, was elated. Geno, he actually showed up 15 minutes after you left to retrieve the guitar. He is heading out to Denver for shows this weekend.

They are incredibly busy!

He is so happy, though.

In all honesty, I provided mostly interesting conversation, bordering on the vulgar at times. Geno's Jedi hands move in masterful ways. I still don't know how he repaired a solder joint the size of a needle tip. Amazing!

And yea, that Thai food was amazing.

There was really no jam time because of the traffic schedule (DC beltway). If I had hung around for another hour or two, my travel time would've doubled.

Next time!

Glad to hear Dan is a happy guy! That Yamaha could use a bit more TLC on the setup, so when he returns, let me know if he'd like some tweakage on that beast.
