Well, not "we,"...."they."

Over in Germany.

Fascinating stuff. I learned why Neumanns cost so much: they apparently pay top Deutsche Mark for their cleaning crew.

There is truly nothing that sounds just like a true Neumann k67 capsule.

When they reissued the U67 a couple years back I almost passed out. If you've listened to any hit records since 1960, you've heard their signature sound on those rekkids. The u87 was the non-tube replacement to that microphone.

Unfortunately, as it is a very nicely made German mic, it's retail is $5999.

Even the 87 is a bit high at 3499.

I got a couple of first year production TLM 170s for what I would consider a song that I will not be parting with in this life.

I want a U87. I have a U89 that I bought back in the 80's for $600. The guy had just bought it then knocked up his girlfriend so he sold it cheap. That was his story anyway.

The U87 is more transparent that the U89. It also has about a 3 to 4 dB boost at 8k to 10kHz.

The U89 has a smaller capsule which is probably the main reason for the difference in the sound. It has about a 3 to 4dB dip centered around 7kHz so it's not as pleasing to the ear for vocals. The U89 is still a great mic. It works great for thin sounding acoustic guitars. It makes them sound large and in charge. When used in conjunction with a KM184 the sound is wonderful.

I don't know how I would justify the expense of a U87. Would still really like to have one. There are so many great sounding large diaphragm mics out there these days. I would like to do an A/B comparison of a Roswell Audio Delphos with my U89 just to hear what the difference is. I have a matched pair of their Mini K47's and they are superb for the price.
