Filtertrons use super tiny coils. They are about half the size, but a similar height to a PAF bobbin.

You get 2000 ohms, give or take, on each coil.

A filtertron magnet is also quite large. It's twice as thick as a PAF. The poles are very long, too. At least an inch, sometimes more.

All of this makes for an interesting sound. Some people don't get on with Trons, and they are an acquired feel and taste, but I have yet to have a better recording pickup for the studio. I think these pickups are very sweet and lack the harsh peaks that higher impedance pickups have. This way I am not fighting the "nails on a chalkboard" screeching/ice pick around 2khz.

There are exceptions, but this has been fairly consistent for me.

Now I need to build a Filtertron Tele.

You can’t have just one.

I went from zero to three “just like that!” (Snaps fingers and does the sassy head wag)

Zero to hero, baby!

I go back and forth between a Filtertron and a P90 as my all-time favorite pickup.

Sometimes it's a DeArmond 2000, and occasionally it's a Strat pickup. And a fine fat humbucker is a thing to sonically behold too...

Those are DeArmond 2000's in that 6120. They are like a hi-fi P90.

KILLER tone.

How would the Black Top Filter’Tron pickups in the current Gretsch 5420's fit in to this conversation?

I’m no f-tron expert, but they sound pretty f-tronish in mine.

The Blacktops do sound great. Like Aaron says above, it's the size and lower impedance of the coils that make these so sweet sounding.

And they growl really nicely. Ref. Malcolm Young (RIP).

Good to know. I'm being haunted by visions of a Cadillac Green 5420. A big birthday coming in October. I deserve it I tell ya.
