...yeah right.

Anyone else out there spring for the unbelievable XTS Winford Drive? I studied this pedal for about 6 months. Then nabbed one on Reverb. Pricey but perhaps the best sounding drive pedal I've ever used. It's perfect. Full rich sound with tight lows, sweet highs, and highly tweakable mids. It really can do low gain mid gain and approach high gain. And it ALL sounds good. Very musical overdrive and very inspiring! Friggin' love it!

Have not heard of that one.

There are so many that come and go, and most are a variation of the same theme.

This seemed appropriate.

I'll check out the soundclips later tonight. I'm not 100% impressed with my Wampler Tumnus Deluxe so it could be knocked from the board with the right contender.

Ha. The Winford Drive quickly dismissed my Wampler Plexi Drive from my board.

Sorry for being lazy and not providing any links but there are several good You Tube videos including one by Shawn Tubbs. I believe he has (or had) the Winford on his main pedal board.

Yeah turn away if the old wallet is feeling light.

Rumor has it there is some 80s big box RAT tech in the Winford. Those early RATs sounded great.

If you have an 80s RAT, open it up and you'll probably find a funny personalized scribble from the assembler on a little paper label in there.

The big take away from the acquisition.

"Why does the pedal sound as good as it does with your rig?" (amp+ guitar) Is that pedal all about pronounced mids like a tube screamer, neutral or scooped etc.

I've never been a pedal guy, so years ago I had very limited knowledge of pedals. I thought all pedals worked with amps you just had to find the right setting by tweaking the knobs.

Obviously not the case.

The early 90s wasn't a whole lot of info out there.
When I moved from Marshalls to Fenders (from Les Pauls to Telecasters to boot) I went through a few pedals (mainly expensive boutiques) till I got a handle on what pedals worked well with Fenders.

Still amazes me what my ears said "ah-ha" yes that's it.

Wasn't Boutique, very mundane and yet made total sense.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, buying your last overdrive pedal is easy, I've done it dozens of times.

I checked out the YT clips but, alas, it doesn't sound much different than my Tumnus Deluxe.

Nik Azam at Ceriatone is finalizing the pre-production tweaking of his soon-to-be-released Horsebreaker pedal: half Centura (his Klon clone) and half Bluesbreaker. I have the Centura and a Prince of Tone already, but I am intrigued.

This is what happens to me frequently....

My first overdrive was a TS 808 that I bought a long time ago.

Then I went through all the usual suspects such as OCD to FDII and at least about 5 others.

Turns out I needed to quick throw something in the bag for a rehearsal with a really small 2 or 3 pedal board and I looked in the drawer and there was the TS808.

After the rehearsal I thought to myself, "Dang this thing sounds great..."

Now it's permanent on my full board.
