Sounds like a jump blues. Good old fashioned Charleston rhythm.

It's halfway between a blues and a jazz blues. On BB's version he is playing rootless 9th chords it sounds like. Each symbol and comma represents 4 beats(1 measure)

|I7, IV7, I7, I7, IV7, IV7, I7, I7, V7, V7, I7, V7|

The bass seems to imply the jazz blues element at times with a walk around the IIm7 - V7. See the chord in parenthesis below. This is subbed for the V7 chord in bar 9.

|I7, IV7, I7, I7, IV7, IV7, I7, I7, (IIm7), V7, I7, V7|

A7, D7, A7, A7, D7, D7, A7, A7, E7, E7, A7, E7

or

A7, D7, A7, A7, D7, D7, A7, A7, Bm7, E7, A7, E7

Rootless dominant 9 chords over a blues using the Charleston swing rhythm is a staple of the blues and jazz blues.

Try this voicing for an A9

e---X---
b---5---
g---4---
D---5---
A---4---
E---X---

this one for the D9

e---5---
b---5---
g---5---
D---4---
A---X---
E---X---

and up two frets from the D9 for the E9

e---7---
b---7---
g---7---
D---6---
A---X---
E---X---

an easy rootless shape for the Bm7 should you try that would be

e---7---
b---7---
g---7---
D---7---
A---X---
E---X---

It moves nicely with just one note change to the E9 that follows it.

The Lou Rawls version was done at Capitol and probably had a staff arranger and some more embellished movement.
