FDP Forum / Fender Amps: Vintage (before 1985) / amp will not get louder despite turning the dial

Aug 22nd, 2019 10:22 AM   Edit   Profile

Maybe I shouldn't ask this here, since my question isn't just about Fender, but I have a vintage AC30 that maxes out on volume at about 4. Regardless of how much you turn the dial, it won't get louder. I've heard that tube amps are very sensitive to current level and if they don't get the exact current that they want, they won't perform. I don't think theres anything wrong wit the amp. Anybody got any ideas?
Thank you

After 30 years, I should play better.

Serious reply — is the knob/pot possibly broken/tapering out after four?

If irritation occurs

discontinue use.

I would blast the pot (from the back) with some non-lube control cleaner and see if that cures it.

If not, I'd disconnect the wires from the pot and test it with a meter.
