Can't complain but sometimes I still do
Aug 27th, 2019 10:41 AM   Edit   Profile

I sold some (useless to me) car parts the other day for $50.00 and it's still in my wallet.

I checked email this morning and Sam Ash is offering $30.00 off on a purchase of $100.00 … today only.

I want another vocal mic and I also want some headphones.

Probably won't get both, but I figure I have a free $80.00 available to use on a $100.00 purchase. That just seems too enticing to let it pass me by.

On the mic, I have two Sennheiser 835e mics that are right at the $100.00 level.

I sound tested several mics including the Shure SM58 and chose the Sennheiser, but with two in hand would it be a good idea to diversify a bit on it and add a Shure SM58 to the mix?

I've shopped headphones a bit and the ones I liked are up in the $180.00 range. I may pass on spending that much today.

Guess I'll see what my attitude is like when I'm standing in the middle of all the stuff.

An SM58 is about as useful in a music setting as a phillips screw driver in a tool box. Good stage vocal mic, good on a snare, toms, mic'ing an amp...

About the only thing I have not happily used an SM58 for is mic'ing a vocal when recording, though many would disagree.

To add, I really dig the Shure Beta 58's (and 57's).

"An SM58 is about as useful in a music setting as a phillips screw driver in a tool box."

It did sound different to me than the Sennheiser when tested, but I do know the reputation of the SM58 (as you state).

The fact that the Sennheiser passed my ear test on the day we compared does not lend me to think it's the only thing I need or should have.

You are confirming that thought for me. It will be primarily a performance mic in the room.

Thanks Larry.

On a side note:

I keep listening to your stuff on Audiomack. You really have some incredible stuff on there.

Shadows and Dreams is something I can never get out of my head. Between the Music, the powerful vocal and the lyrics … very an impressive piece of work.

I don't imagine that just came out of the clear blue sky. Maybe one day I can get you to tell me about that.

AKG K240 headphones are amazingly good for a sub-$100 pair of cans. I have three of the original 240s (I paid $170 apiece years ago) and they're indestructible. Still going strong.

It looks like there are some variants of the AKG K240. Link seems to be a *standard* version maybe at about $70.00.

Then they have a K240 MKII *Professional* version at about $150.00.

In the end I want two pair. I figured (back when I was looking) to keep the cost below $400.00 for the pair.

With that in mind the MKII doesn't scare me away at all, just not sure it will be a today purchase.

We shall see.

I'm back.

I ended up with another Sennheiser e835 and a pair of drum sticks.

The Shure SM58 was not a qualifying brand, so that was out. I considered some other brand mics, but decided not.

I looked at headphones. I actually could have got two pair of the AKG K240s and been fine and had my two pair of headphones. I would have been spending about $100.00 of new money to get them. Not that it would have been the end of the world, but I decided not.

Part of that choice was the K240s are partially open headphones which is fine for listening, but if recording vocals with headphones that escaping sound could be an issue. I want to think that through a bit more.

I was able to make use of the $30.00 in Sam Ash *bonus* money along with my $50.00 in *found* car parts cash and only had to spend $31.18 in new money to get a third microphone … I don't suppose that is bad.
