"Help, I'm a a rock": Amelia Earhart

The last time we had a pet put down, we opted for an in-home euthanasia, provided by a licensed vet.

She came to the house, and my wife held her beloved 12 year old deaf cat, while an IV line was applied. A light anesthetic eased Smelka's pain while we said our goodbyes and then, at a nod, the vet administered the final dose.

It was not a happy day, but at least Smelka died in familiar surroundings with those who cared for her.

We did our home-grown grief thing, and went on. Who knew we could have accessed a Veterinary Social Worker to help out?

Veterinary Social Workers are a thing now. Who knew? Average pay is over $53,000 a year.

"Because veterinary social work involves loss and sometimes abuse, social workers in this field must be able to handle high-stress situations and conflict.

Among the tasks they perform for pet owners is: providing pet loss and support (grief counseling), advising on treatment including help with decision making, support through hospice and palliative care, and therapeutic counseling."
