I came across a 1995 Gibson Nighthawk (fireburst finish) in a pawnshop. Looked to be in good shape, but then I found a repair at the headstock. Visible only from the back, it seemed like an old repair and it was obviously still holding up.

When I initially asked the price, before discovering the repair, the owner said $1000 (with OHSC). After I pointed out the repair, which he said he'd not noticed, the price dropped to $600. Does that price sound reasonable?

If he's willing to drop $400 just like that, then there's probably some more wiggle room left.

Do you want the guitar or the deal?

I’d ask for another $200 for his lie.

Yep.

Bump it at least another $150-$200 and that's a good deal.

Many folks believe Gibson should pre-break and repair all their headstocks before the guitars leave the factory. The rationale is the headstock always breaks at its weakest point.

Which means that repaired Nighthawk is actually stronger than it was when when it left the factory.

A UV flashlight is also a really good way to read non-inked serial numbers stamped into wood that have flattened out over time and are otherwise unreadable.

I had one repaired years ago. My own fault for not having a decent case. I have to say it never gave me a bit of trouble the next ten years till it was run over by my drummers station wagon.

If it had been a Telecaster it would have given your drummer's car a flat tire and a maybe a dented rim.

The irony is Gibson headstocks can easily break, and the neck is set. Fender headstocks don't break and the neck is easily replaceable.

If you haven’t jumped, I wouldn’t.

If you have, I hope it works out great!

See how they are?! A guitar player would never do that!

He probably wasn't even in the car at the time.
