Awesome Bill; that's something I'm going to try. I wonder if there is a way to add a resistor across the pot instead of changing it out .. If that makes any sense.

Adding a resistor across the pot can only lower its value. It's not that hard to change it, and you have to pull the board to change the capacitor anyway.

My relic Blues Jr has been pretty much sitting for 3 years, unused, until this week. I've been hesitant to put any money into this amp because I have several others that sound much better. I was even thinking of selling it.
But I came across a great deal on an old EV Force 12 speaker and dropped it into the Blues Jr.
Now it's a whole new amp. It has more volume, more headroom, and better frequency response across the entire range with the tone controls. Now that I hear what this amp can really do, I may go ahead with Billm's mods, or maybe not. I'm pretty happy with the way it sounds right now. I'm going to try it out at my next gig to see if it can hang with the band at stage volume. Also, while I had it apart, I replaced the stupid pre-rusted chassis bolts and back plate screws with some new stainless steel ones. Thanks to Billm for the tip on removing the old screws.

I normally hang out at the Bass page, but I just bought a Blues Jr. and I have a quick question. I went to GC to get a BJ NOS. The one they had was not laquered, but otherwise appeared the same as the NOS; Jensen speaker, etc. It did, however, have a Limited Edition plaque on the back. Is this essentially the same amp? It was priced the same as the NOS.

MikeH: You too have discovered that the P12R is a total piece of crap. Congratulations!

Tom: All Blues Juniors are the same electronics. In this case, even the speaker is the same between the "NOS" (just marketing; it's not new-old anything) and the Limited Edition.

The Limiteds I've seen have all had lacquer, but a light coat and not the orange tint found on the NOS.

Thanks Billm. I appreciate the info and the speedy response. I actually prefer the Limited's appearance, so I guess it all worked out just fine. Thanks again.

MikeH,
I discovered the same thing. In my case it was the EVM12L which is even more efficient than the Force.
The amp easily hangs with the live band. We play loud and I have lots of clean head room and rarely turn the volume and master above half way.

I also added the basic Billm tone stack mod, presence control and fixed bias.

I've been using this amp with EV as my main gigging amp since "97.

I don't recomend the EV for those who use their amps at bedroom volumes and still want to get some breakup. It's also a lot heavier.
Great for gigging with a full band though.

New out of the box Blues Jr III doesn't seem to have any noticeable reverb. Is it that subtle in all of these?

hi guys!

I thought I´d share my latest BJ-take with you.

Only recently I started doing some recordings at home - mainly to showcase some of my amps and guitars, but also to take notes of some musical ideas.
I´m a singer/guitar-player in a rock-band "usually", but lately I´ve become intrigued with the idea of playing instrumental music.

Check it out if you like!

Oh, the BJ is unmodded safe for BillM´s much needed reverb-fix (thank you, Bill!).
The speaker is a current Jensen C12R RI.

cheers - C.

JEDZEP, make sure the RCA cables are hooked up tot he reverb pan. I believe the III's all seem to be shipping with it disconnected.

There should be plenty of reverb in a Blues Junior III, definetly check the connections going to the reverb tank the ones they use suck... I had to replace the rca plugs on mine and put on much better fitting plugs!

Back to my question about tone stack. I have not had time/energy to load in Bill's suggestion above on the mids scoop, but I did a real quickie test today. Swapped the mids cap for a .005 uF mallory metal foil type, and left the pot alone. The other tone stack caps we're already Mallory types from the original home-brew mod c/o Billm, prior to the kit option with orange drops. My other BlJr has that.

Anyhow, the result is quite pleasing if not also quite different. Vox TB like with all tone knobs on 6. The mids brings on the gain and rock to about 6 but lots of treble above 6, leaving the treble pot as a sparkle or adjustable bright switch. Bass and mids now completely separated and bass fully functional and gets gainy over 6. If I start thinking this is too bright I may back off to a .05uF, but hard to put down the guitar right now. Oh, it's a stock gold label speaker ~2008.

I guess my BlJr. 1 is now more British. I put brown grill cloth on her to suit.

With such a small mids cap, you're keeping all the mids in the stack, thus the Vox flavor.

Hi folks! Longtime lurker, first-time poster. I have one of the MIM Blues Juniors, the previous version. I'm pretty happy with it stock but am looking forward to trying out some mods. A master volume with a more even taper would be nice ... Thanks for all the tips. Gonna spend a couple days looking through the archives.

Help me decide between the Blues Junior and Hot Rod Deluxe. Wife and I have a 5-piece: bass, electric violin, drums, singer/percussion and me on guitar. All covers, from Hank Williams to Dave Matthews to Celtic to Classic Rock — very eclectic. I also do fair number of sit-in, pick-up gigs with rock/blues bands. Playing a Custom Shop 1960 NOS strat and nice old ES-335. Gig weekly at small clubs, occasional outdoor parties and festivals, private events at mid-sized halls. 40-50 gigs/year. Small is good with all the lugging and load-ins. Looking for tone first, then volume, esp for bigger/outdoor venues. Wondering mostly if the Blues Junior will be loud enough. Playing now through a Princeton Chorus (bought years ago when I was not as ,,, discerning!).

Hi James!

The BJ is plenty loud enough for most of the playing-situations you mentioned - 15 watts can go a long way in terms of volume.
But - the HR Deluxe sounds quite different! It´s a lot fuller/bigger with more bass and depth. I think you really need to hear both amps to decide which sound you prefer...

cheers - C.

JamesJr,
Given that list of gigs, I'd rather be playing the HRD or a Blues Dlx RI.

The only mod I would make to the HRD if I gigged with one regularly would be to the taper of the volume control on the clean channel.

I own both of the amps mentioned in your OP. I think the HDR is much more tonefull all things being equal. Much better low end than the BJr and it sounds better turned down were you have to give the BJr its head to get some tone from it. The drive channel on the HRD is not great maybe not even good but it takes pedals well on the clean side.

Just my opinion.

I assume you guys are talking about stock BJr's. What about the modified ones? Particularly with most of BillM mods?

Do they not hang in there then?
