I saw (but did not play) the linked 1979 Gretsch Super Chet yesterday at Gryphon Stringed Instruments.

It's a real looker!

That said, are these considered to be great Gretsches or...?

I saw another one advertised in Vintage Guitar (a '77) for $3995.00. That's quite a discrepency in price given the one at Gryphon is in beautiful condition... |

I played one once for only a little while. Very nice sounding but the neck was too narrow for me.

I would say the 77 is priced too high. |

Is that headstock on the '79 a vintage look?

I'm new to the Gretsch world, but so far it seems for resale value, the more vintage, the better. |

The Super Chet is not a favorite of yer typical Gretsch-o-phile.

And they didn't do well when they were brought to market...too much of a departure from the favored "vintage" look preferred by players of these kinds of guitars.

I lump the Super Chet in with the Beast BST solidbody that Gretsch marketed for a short while. That one went nowhere too.

Despite all this--both guitars were built to the same high standards of their entire line. The cosmetics are what sunk 'em, I think. |

Yes PeeGoo, nice to know. I kind of like how they look but still like the vintage look also. |

When I was in retail in the late 60s / early 70s I had one of those that my predecessor had bought from the Gretsch rep. I couldn't sell that thing at any price. After it sat around taking up space for a number of years it got so shop worn I priced it as used, still wouldn't sell. Finally one day an old gent came in, played it for awhile and said he liked it. "What'll you take for it?" he asked. "What'll you give me for it?" was my reply. Before he was done answering, as far as I was concerned the old fool just bought himself a guitar. My old boss is probably still trying to find a way to bury the loss we took on that thing. |
