I saw some previews of the Time Machine 2011 dvd. It's quite obvious he's not playing his usual black block neck. Anybody have any info? The link below gives a decent look at the bass, which looks like it has an older worn body. The audio isn't great but you get the idea. |

It could be yet another replacement neck on the old '72 body. The last BG interview, as well as his bass tech posting on another forum say the original black block neck went wonky a short while ago, and they grew tired of fixing it. The last couple of years supposedly the black block neck is a custom shop done replacement.

Then again, yeah it could just be another new custom shop bass relic'd. |

It is a CS neck, I don't know if the whole bass is a CS product; you can see the CS logo on the back of the headstock near the end of the promo video. |

The bass also has a different pickguard as well. While not conclusive, this is another reason that I think we might be looking at a completely different bass altogether |

Yes, matryx81, looks like a pearloid pick guard, and the body looks chewed up on the edges from what I can see. More body wear than what I remember on the original 72 also. Getty is so identified with maple board/black blocks I wonder if Fender is planning a pearl block/pearloid option for the Geddy Lee sig?
I plan on getting the Time Machine dvd soon. That'll give me a chance to get some better looks at the gear. I do think I see a 4 bolt neckplate too. |

He's had that bass since about mid-year 2010. Here is a closer look of it:

|

I hope the black block inlays stay, as that is a big selling point IMVHO. |

I actually like the antique blocks with the antique (cream)pickguard . . . I have the same (antique white blocks and pickguard) with my TSB/maple fretboard combination. I took it even further and added cream pickup covers for the Lakland 5 string. |

I finally got the Time Machine dvd and thought I'd update this thread. The necks certainly appear to have the Fender Custom Shop logo on the back of the headstock. In the credits there is a custom pickguard designer listed. That explains those. There is also a Tom Brantley listed as a custom pickup designer and re-winder in the credits. That leaves the body and controls. The custom shop neck on old bodies sure makes sense, and he's probably having the original pickups re-wound as they fail. I also noticed that the changed necks don't have the "offset contour body" decal, and the logo decal doesn't look quite right- smaller maybe? Whatever the case I think his bass playing is better than ever. |

Black blocks are ok but I much prefer Pearl inlay. But hey, mine only has Pearl dots LOL |

Pearl blocks sound better than black blocks. |

I do have a bass that has pearl blocks and a sweet tone, but that might have more to do with the mismatched pickups. I think... |

The new issue of Bass Player magazine has Geddy on the cover, and they go into a lot of his gear - ignored the Rickenbacker 4003 though! :(

Anyway, it says that the body on his main bass is the same, but they put a new Custom Shop neck on it, the one with pearl blocks, and that it is a bit bigger than the previous one. I don't have the issue in front of me, so it's not the exact wording, and it's not up on the website yet. |

Thanks for the info hieronymous. I'll look for the magazine.
|
