The general tone on the whole song but the outro on "On Every Street" is the definitive tone and shows the beauty of a clean strat through a nice tube amp.

It's probably an EMG-equipped Pensa. Knopfler almost exclusively played Pensa guitars at the time he recorded the song.

I once walked into a friend's house and a Knopfler song was playing. I thought "nice Straty sound". It was actually a video and when I looked the guitar was a mid 70s Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with the PU selector in the "both" position.

Yeah...I didn't think this one sounded all that much like a Strat to me. Not that I'm a genius or anything. But it just didn't seem to have "it."

I guess I have a lot to learn. To my ears this sounded like a typical Strat in the 4 spot, middle and neck pups. I know Mr Knopfler was using Pensa-Shur guitars live but I thought he was recording still with some of his older Strats. I always thought he used the Les Pauls when he was playing with a little heavier sound, but I'm probably wrong.

who knows what he used to record it with, but on the tour after that album he used his old Schecter on that song

I have no idea what it was actually recorded with but the intro and outro to "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam always struck me as definitive clean Strat tone.
I agree with this assertion if it's true.

Maybe Wicked GTR will pipe in and tell us. Pretty sure he used a strat on this tune, though. BTW, I love that tune.

I love Knopfer's tones, especially the early strat stuff. Hard to say what he's using on Every Street. Could be a strat, sounds a bit compressed.

Another guy that comes to my mind when thinking about clean strat tones is Hank Marvin. Love that stuff too.

When it comes to definitive clean Strat tone, look no further than the incomparable Hank Marvin!

Knopfler is often cited as someone who plays with that "definitive clean Strat tone", and rightly so - especially on those first few Dire Straits albums.

But Hank Marvin's tone is just pure, clean Strat heaven.
Of course, he was one of Knopfler's big influences, so it all fits.

Listening to Knopfler's last few solo records, I'd say he's got a pretty definitive clean Gibson tone going on too.

Banjo Dan: Yep. Yet another wonderful play by Hank Marvin!

FWIW, Hank was the first guy I heard of to rewire the bottom Tone control to the Bridge pup. Ever since, it's the first thing I've had done to every Strat I've bought (except an EJ which came that way from the factory).

Hank sets his Bridge Tone control on "7.5" and plays on the Bridge pup almost exclusively.

If you want to come close to nailing his tone, set up your Strat the same way and plug into a BOSS RV-3 set (l to r) at:

"10:30", "10:30", "12:00", "7".

Then plug into a clean tube amp (like my '72 SFDR) and you will be pleasantly surprised!

No mention of Hank Marvin would be complete without a link to him playing "Wonderful Land"... Absolutely SHAMEFUL that Hank and The Shadows are not members of the R&R HOF.

6
