I'm an old fossil who just got back into drumming after many years. I recently purchased a used Tama Imperialstar drum set. There are lots of small surface scratches especially on the bass drum and I'm wondering if there is some polish available that might clean them up? The drums appear to be wrapped. Any help will be appreciated!

With extremely deep scratches your pretty much screwed. Light scratches can be polished out using an automotive buffing compound. Deeper ones can be sanded with 600-1200 grit wet paper then buffed to gloss. The actual finish of the wrap is not particularly thick, use caution and care.

Finish with an automotive wax. maintain with Pledge. This has always worked for me. I pull the heads so the tension rods are out of the way.

Another tip. If you use a machine buffer be very careful not to overheat the wrap. It can be burned. Elbow grease may be a better choice.

I want to try one of those headlight lens restoration kits on a set of drums. That might work slick.

Yeah I don't think these scratches are deep at all. I will give the automotive compound a try. Then I'll shine'em up with some good automotive wax. Not sure I have the guys to try the headlight lens kit although like you said it may work great.) Lot's of good ideas here! Thanks once again for your help!

A lot of the guys that restore drums use a headlight restorer. It's basically a plastic polish. Novus is a brand that is mentioned often.

Thanks mortar. Good to know.

Before the explosion of headlight restore kits on the market. I used Dupont white polishing compound on headlight lenses. This started with a '92 Mustang GT. I just assumed the reverse would work as well, headlamp kit on drum wrap.
