It happened while I was heading to my HOG chapter St. Patrick's day ride. I was alone and was in the midst of a pack of cars on a busy main artery through town. An SUV had to make a panic stop right in front of me due to a clown pulling out of a parking lot directly in front of her. I swerved to avoid and almost made it around her, but the left knee clipped the rear corner. By then I'd decelerated quite a bit but not enough.

I glanced off the SUV and went down, sprawling forward into the street and doing some more damage. Slid a car length or so. Helmet got skinned up but did not crack.

As I was sliding I was happy as heck, seriously. Had I struck the SUV a few inches to the left it would have been my head, neck and chest cavity in pieces.

Lots of people stopped to help and to offer statements about what went down. My HOG friends got my bike and stuff recovered - that was a huge load off my mind when they got involved.

The docs will operate to piece me together with plates and screws this week, but I'm sure that I'm in for a long road to recovery. Hoping for the best and expecting the worst. I have no illusions about what a shattered knee could mean.

OH yea, that teaching job I just got has probably gone up in smoke since we hadn't gotten to the contract signing part yet.

All in all, I'm still happy. I could have wound up far, far worse.

|

I'd say your experiences while deployed has taught you to see this as a minor bump in the road compared to what it could have been, and to appreciate the bright side of the situation, that you were not more seriously hurt, and will be able to recover from this. This is, in my opinion, yet another positive influence of military service.

That being said, Here's to wishing you a full and speedy recovery. It is something all riders fear, and your skills kept it from being much worse.

Heal up quickly and keep us posted. Mojo to you.

|

Helmet,

Good on you! I saw a doofus out riding a Softail yesterday wearing a green ballcap, green unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip-flops. Looked to be headed into a Sports Bar for tournament action and green beer. Can you imagine your wreck decked out like that dude!

Speedy recovery wishes. You still know your name and are not an immovable mass of drooling flesh because you elected to wear appropriate gear for motorcycle riding. Smart is as smart does. |

Good golly, Miss Molly.

Does that suck, but, as you said, it always could've been worse.

Such is the life of a motorcyclist.

But being the glass half full guy that I am:
A. You did manage to avoid a worst case scenario.
B. You're able to tell us all about it.
C. Who says you can't teach on one wheel, unless you're teaching gymnastics.

Think positive, and prayers and moejo for a speedy recovery. |
