I'm seriously considering this. <br /> - The year of manufacture (1962)<br /> - condition<br /> <br /> provided the originality can be believed.<br /> <br /> "Exceptionally clean 100 percent original Jazz Bass® from late 1962 or early 1963 with the older style individual string mutes. Includes original strap, cord and copy of original bill of sale."<br /> <br /> thoughts? |

Barry...... obviously you need lots more detailed pictures in order to start considering this bass.<br /> I notice that it is in almost museum like condition from the pics on there.<br /> It lacks a strap button on the rear of the headstock. <br /> <br /> Stack-Knob. |

"It looks like it may be a curve board?"<br /> <br /> if so, that's a shame. Both my 62 Bass VI and 62 Jaguars are slab boards.<br /> <br /> Good advice. Thanks USK.<br /> |

Barry, this bass was offered by Gruhn only a few months ago. I emailed them at the end of December asking about originality, provenance and with a request for more photos.<br /> <br /> The Gruhn employee wrote back:<br /> <br /> "All I say about this bass is it is a great example of a Jazz Bass. It came from us from the original owner who lives in Florida ." <br /> <br /> They sent me some more photos but nothing disassembled. I did notice the missing strap button but didn't follow it up further. <br /> <br /> If you're interested, I'll forward you the pics I have. |

USK, wouldn't a curved board to be expected on a late 62/early 63? |

"I did notice the missing strap button but didn't follow it up further."<br /> <br /> trawling, as I do, through some auction archives, I've found 3 1963's that all have the headstock strap button. And all the 1962's (another 3) have as well. Somewhat conclusive in my eyes.<br /> <br /> @USK, liverbird:<br /> <br /> this seems to be an important consideration. Thanks for raising it. |

Apologies! Of course it's a curve board.<br /> I didn't read the listing properly, and took it to be an earlier bass.<br /> My mistake, sorry guys.<br /> <br /> Stack-Knob.<br /> <br /> (error edited from earlier post ) |

Ask for pictures of the dates on the inside of the neck heel and body cavity, plus the identification/years of the pots. Certificates of previous ownership are great too. Collectively that should tell you the approx year (within 1-3 years), unless dates were forged or missing/unknown. I had a 62 Jazz and loved its woody tone but it was too heavy and it keep bowing its neck which required the neck to be heat & moisture treated to get it back correct. Intonation was okay but never great. Had several from that time period too, about 4. I eventually tired of the 62 and got a German Warwick Thumb bass that I still have till today. Very high quality. And, I like the newer Am Jazz Standards today too, better quality than my older Jazzes. Plus buying Vintage today is wrought with high risk, both from a quality perspective, the over-hype and potential fraud. A great instrument is indeed important, but it's the player that can bring any bass to life ... Best to go moderation and focus on personal playing ability. |
