I'm taking a four day weekend to rest and try to get some headway on some projects I have going on around the old homestead. I live in a urban setting in a neighborhood just 4 miles from downtown Seattle. I can walk to the grocery store, the drug store, the liquor store, etc. and often do.

Yesterday I walked to the grocery store and the drug store and at least a half dozen times was "hit-up" for money during the trip.

Just a little while ago the doorbell rings and it's a guy trying to get my money with some kind of scam; "I'm trying to go to college next fall and just need you to do this for me. Blah, blah, blah" as I am shutting the door saying, "sorry, not interested."

Normally I don't answer my door unless I am expecting someone, which I think is pretty pathetic but if I do it is always someone wanting something from me. The reason I did answer the door is I thought it might be my lawn guy.

This has been going on for several years and I know there are needy people out there but I am by no means rich, am getting tired of it and just letting off a little steam here as I have my lunch.

How bad is it where you live?

I never answer my front door. I have a window looking out to my front porch, I open the blind and address them through the window, if I decide to answer at all. Nobody I know comes unannounced, they will call before coming over anyway. And yes, 99% of the time, when I decide to answer, it is someone trying to pry money out of my wallet (the other 1% are religious or politicians).

It happens everywhere. I live in a village that has deed restrictions and we enforce the "No Soliciting" code. We have gates & security, but they still make it to the front door.

In the past it would aggravate me. I would chastise them and sometimes even show my police badge and run their data through the system to see if they were on the up & up.

Today I just smile and say no thank you. I don't let silly stuff ruffle my feathers.

Love,
SandBagger ~ Proud new owner of three ulcers.

Yeah, it's everywhere. If people have no marketable skills to sell stuff or services--or make money for someone that does--they ask for money. Been that way since the dawn of time. These people don't bother me at all.

What does get me excited is when people knock on my door and desire to convey the wonders of their religious beliefs to me--and try to convince me that I too should get aboard their Jeezo Bus. I will always oblige them their time--but only if they first agree that when they are finished with their fifteen minutes of uninterrupted sales pitch, they must return the kind consideration I've just extended to them. And I will tell them why my life is so amazingly fantastic and why I'm such a happy dude (I really am).

Only twice in my life has anyone agreed to my reasonable request.

"What does get me excited is when people knock on my door and desire to convey the wonders of their religious beliefs to me--and try to convince me that I too should get aboard their Jeezo Bus."

I know what you mean. I'd just as soon they ask for money. Bp

"Been that way since the dawn of time."

I have lived in this house for 28 years and it wasn't until 5 years ago or so that people have come to my door trying to scam money out of me. It just annoys me as I no longer have my "fortress of solitude", a place where I could escape and expect people to leave me alone. They're storming the gates now!

Not so much of that around here... if you don't count the neighbor kids and their school fundraisers.

A few years back I was replacing a mower blade on my push mower in my driveway, and a guy was going door to door, selling some kind of spray cleaner.

He walked up as I was working, and started his pitch. I told him no thanks, I was in the middle of this job here, thanks, and have a nice day. He persisted. I reminded him that I didn't want to buy any spray cleaner; I wanted to get this blade mounted and cut my grass.

Then he squirted the stuff on my lawn mower and started wiping it to show what a "great job" it does.

Okay, gloves are now off.

I stood up and he stepped back. I advised him he was now trespassing and had three seconds to remove himself from my property--or he would be removed.

Me: "one... TWO..." He moved on, spewing some choice words as he vamoosed. I chuckled and got back to work.

It was occasional in our Memphis suburb.

So far, non-existent here (18 mos.)

My best answer for non-repeats is to let the 2 Dobermans "help" me answer the door. They'll pop out their heads eagerly and are pretty effective to shorten any and all conversations. They're well trained so if its actually a valid visit, they'll back up on my command. Whether I give them that command depends on the intrusion.

I think this little (what I call a scam) was talked about before.

Nice young lady knocks on the door. I need to go out the side and around the garage because the dogs are going nuts.

I catch her walking away and ask what it is she needs. She says, "I have the voter registry here and I'm just checking to see if *these four named people* registered to vote live here?"

She names us all off and I say, "yes."

She says, "I am with *Organizing America* for President Obama. Are you supporters?"
-------------------------------
Scam on monolithic scale ... or what?

What the helk are we suppose to make of that?

Nothing wrong, other than ... I'm just not too keen on folks seeking ways to edge (scam) themselves into the voters booth at my front door.

I don't care who they support ;)

Which BTW is completely in line with the topic of the thread :)
