" As I've said before, my motto is, "Buy HIGH, Sell LOW" "

Lol, too many of us are caught in this same trap.

The best Strat I've ever played was my first, a well used '57 I traded a guy a Firebird VII for back in '70. Probably because the original owner had just played the crap out of it it had that thing that no other Strat I've played since compares to, in my mind anyway. The finish was so bad the guy I got it from stripped it off and just varnished the body. Fortunately he left all the cavity markings intact. My local luthier refined it for me in the original thin two-tone sunburst nitro, which he said he'd mixed up and shot a thousand times "because of Fenders lousy finishes". He even reapplied the yellow undercoat. I played the crap out of it and in two years the new finish had been bar reliced to the point you couldn't tell it wasn't original. Sold off to fund college...sigh. |

"It has a tone quality all it's (sic) own. No real explanation for it, the wood isn't particularly special, the neck pocket is rather loose and it's a 1969 factory refin."

Sounds like the wood IS in fact particularly special. |

"Not trying to knock the vibe of an historical Fender but they are, IMO, not the same magic as hollow body electrics and acoustics."

+1 from my experience. If I had some serious money to invest in guitars, it would be old Martins and not old Fenders/Gibsons. That said, we are smack dab in the middle of a golden age of guitar making right now. |

Good point. Acoustics are getting lighter and more responsive than ever. My McIlroy A-25 is amazing. |

Being a geezer myself and having owned a early 60s strat for a couple years back in the 70s I also don't buy into the vintage hype/mojo. I'm quite happy with my classic 50s strat.
That said I would rather have pre CBS pups over any other available pups. |

For those who were wondering, I was in the shop today, they are asking $10,000.

Now they think it may have a factory refinish, if they can verify that they said the price would go up to $15,000 - $18,000.

It's cool, but not that cool :-)

David. I wish I would have put out the money for the 60's Strat back in the day. I had other guitars and felt I couldn't afford a new Strat. Oh well my cousin had a 50's Oly White Strat that I remember from the mid 60s. He also had a Marshall Full Stack. He wishes he had the guitar and amp back. Really the Roadworn series feel like an old broken in guitar. |

Rfrakes, when he first handed it to me that's what I thought it was :-)

Cheers,

David |
