I'm in with a Rebel 20 Head.

Bought it because I had an open back cab with a 16 Ohm Vintage 30 I no longer use with the Prosonic.

Thoroughly satisfied with this little amp although I did swap out V2 for a 12AY7 which gives much greater range on the gain control with a more gradual onset.
Also keeps gain where I want it.

Interesting. Please elaborate on "keeps gain where I want it". Does it drift?

Is the high end of the gain still as overdriven, or does it now have less OD overall?

12AY7 gives round 40% less amplification than a 12AX7 so gain is reduced.
However I found on the Rebel 20 that the gain hit saturation way before you get to "full" gain on the dial.
Now I can get just to the edge of break up round 5-6 ( just over half) and doubt that it affects total overdrive achievable - although I don't use that much OD. Gain is now much easier to dial in.
Gain where I want it for me is from 1 - 10 not 1 - 6 as it was with the 12AX7.

On the Sweetwater site (FDP sponsor), they are advertising a free set of EL34s with purchase of a Rebel 30 - to plug in place of the 6V6s claiming this amp can take either. REALLY? A quick look at the Egnater site I could not find support for this. I'd love to pop in a set of EL34s I already have, but I'd also rather not blow the OT in my fairly new Rebel 30 (BTW the OT does look a little whimpy already for a 30W amp). Thoughts? Where did that recommendation come from?
I bought a used Rebel 30 about two weeks ago and love the tones, but there is either tube rattle or some other kind of rattle/buzzing going on that neither I nor the guys at the store have been able to sort out. They have some more 6V6 tubes on order to try (tried several sets of EL84s), but nothing gets rid of the rattle, and it gets worse as the amp (tubes) warm up.

Any one else dealt with this, or solved this problem? As I said, I love the tone, but I'm ready to take this thing back and use my money for something else...

CheapShoes-email this guy and let us know what you find. Pretty cool if that can be done.

alex@egnateramps.com

edit:
reverend mikey-I was on another forum and someone asked near the same question and the email I posted was provided to get an answer.

reverend mikey-Just did some more reading and it seems the tubes are the problem.

email me if you would like the link to this. Don't think it's OK to link the other forum.

Lights on.

Thanks Zenlad. Alex from Egnater wrote back that yes indeed an EL34 swap is OK. Need to reset the bias though. I don't know if there is a test point built on the board. I asked- awaiting a response. I don't have a bias rite meter to make it easy.

zenland,

Thanks for the offer, but the amp went back today. We tried another set of tubes in it, and it just seems to have a chronic rattle/buzz, even at lower volumes once it warms up.

That's fine, I have three other tube amps, one I'm starting to play more now that I got the reverb fixed...

...the Rebel IS a nice sounding amp, though; has some Dr. Z flavors in it...

CheapShoes-I wanted to replace the tubes with JJ's (when I first got the 20) and they said it would have to be re-biased. Since I knew nothing about it and would have to take it to my tech I decided to let it ride until they are needed. Love to hear how the R30 sounds with the EL 34's though.

reverend mikey-Yeah, if the new tubes didn't fix it returning it was the way to go. Been down that road before with used amps.

Zenland,
Groove Tube GT6V6S,s are JJ6V6,s rebadged.
So no gain to be had from the swap and definitely no bias adjustment for the change.

If your original tubes are GT6V6R,s - different story.

Anybody brave the 6v6/el34 swap yet? I'm not unhappy with my Rebel-30 sound, but I'm curious.

I'd try the EL34s if somebody would post a how-to bias with a multimeter for this amp. Not going to purchase a Bias-Rite just to try the EL34s. That's what I liked about the Fender HR series with bias test points and bias trim pot. I've yet to open up the Rebel 30. But honestly I'm liking and using my Vox NT and Fender BLJr a lot more than the Rebel because I can't get the tones I want at reasonable volumes. Might be the speaker cab is very spikey until it gets broken in but I think it is the amp. Tones are there but attainable at ear-splitting volume. Would love to get breakup from the clean channel but the settings in the manual are rediculous (volume wise).

CheapShoes
In the Rebel 20 the bias point is clearly labelled for the EL84,s and another for the 6V6's.
There is a clearly labelled bias pot for each next to the test point and the bias voltage/current reading is printed on the circuit board.
Be surprised if the 30 isn't the same.

Cool; I'll peek under the hood when I get a chance. The Rebel 30 manual is silent on bias and biasing.

I am on the verge of picking up a used Rebel 30 combo. But before I buy I have to ask, are these durable amps? I know they sound great and are pretty versatile. I guess the whole made in China thing has me a little nervous.

"I guess the whole made in China thing has me a little nervous."

To me it comes down to the quality control exercised by the company commissioning the work.

My Egnator seems fine, uses JJ tubes, hasn't (yet) given me any reason to think it won't last as long as say my Fender SCXD which is also Made in China.
Must say it runs way cooler than many tube amps I've owned and is probably the quietest amp (as in noise floor) I've owned.
